Background and purpose: Considering the importance of social media and the               expansion of the use of Instagram as a popular platform among young people and especially women, this research studies the moderating role of gender in the relationship between body image and the use of Instagram, as well as self-esteem and the use of Instagram.
Method: This correlational research was conducted using the questionnaires of "body image", "self-esteem" and "use of Instagram" in a sample of 375 students from University of Birjand who were selected by stratified random sampling method.
Findings: Gender as a moderating variable was significant in the relationship between body image and use of Instagram and self-esteem and use of Instagram. The relationship between negative body image and use of Instagram was not significant in male students, but it was significant and direct in female students. Also, there was no significant relationship between self-esteem and the use of Instagram in male students, while this relationship was significant and inverse in female students.
Conclusion: Today, there are many social media whose use is increasing among people, especially young people, and they have provided many possibilities to their users. In the meantime, most social media users focus on Instagram. Due to the importance of the impact of social media on psychological topics, in this research, it was tried to conduct a complete research on gender as a moderating variable on the relationship between two psychological variables (body image and self-esteem) and the use of Instagram, so that the decision makers of social media Make better decisions based on this. Finally, based on the results of this research, the use of Instagram and the impact of psychological issues on women is more than men, which requires more comprehensive and detailed attention and planning
